The water wheel (1) has chambers (10), and paddles (5) inclined under a certain angle of incidence to a surface line of a hub (4). The paddles are arranged in arrow shape such that each chamber is split into two arrow shaped partial chambers. The partial chambers communicate with one another in an unhindered and unrestricted manner. Two side walls in an area of under water (7) are recessed such that each partial chamber laterally opens when reaching a lower angular point. A locking shoe (11) protrudes with a sweep-angle in a direction of motion of the paddles in an arrow shaped manner.
