[Also in Division B8] Cartons are folded up from blanks A or B and their corners locked by the action of a die 38 and plunger 39, the locking being characterized in that for each corner a tab, e.g. 33, 64, 164, provided by a three-armed star slot 32, 35 (Fig. 1), 135 in the side panel 24, 124, is pushed outwardly by a movable finger 49 so as to snap through and lay behind an engagement slot 28, 30, 130 in the co-operating flap 16, 18, 116 of the end panel 12, 13, 112. A blank is aligned with the die aperture by pins 37 and has its side 24, 124 and end 12, 13, 112 panels folded upwardly as the plunger descends by the upper curved surfaces of side folders 44 and bars 47 respectively, each flap 16, 18, 116 being folded over the respective side panel by a slide 45. A pin 46 or blade 146 projects from the plunger sides, e.g. 42, adjacent each end thereof and bears against the blank side panel 24, 124 to cause the relevant portion of the slot to open and allow flap entry. Each pair of fingers 49 which is normally kept retracted within a plunger's side by a spring-loaded yoke 60 acting on a shaft 57 and downwardly extending, finger-carrying levers 58 is projected by engagement of a die-mounted cam 55 and a roller 54 mounted on shaft 57 between bell-crank levers 59 and snaps through the appropriate lock tabs. To ensure positive lock tab displacement, backup elements which may comprise separate elements such as a single roller 65, a pair of rollers 66, 67, a plate (266, Fig. 11) or blades 146, Fig. 8 (Fig. 9), prevent side panel bulging- Following corner locking, the plunger 39 con. tinues downwards and prior to the return stroke the carton is stripped off by the lower ends of bars 47 (Fig. 5), fingers 49 now being fully retracted since roller 54 has passed beyond cam 55. The location of the fingers 49 is adjustable within a surrounding aperture and plunger plates 56 of varying thickness accommodate cartons of differing height.
