摘要 1,056,739. Transferring designs. DENNISON MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1965 [Dec 11, 1964], No. 44619/65. Heading B6C. Articles, such as plastic bottles B having a conical surface, are labelled by transferring inked indicia from a printed strip S to the conical surface by hot pressing with the raised part 17 of a rotating iron 1, the strip being fed during transfer at a predetermined speed and in a direction transverse to the article axis, and the article being rotated about its axis at a speed such that its velocity where it contacts the longitudinal medial line of the strip is equal to that of the strip, its surface velocity being correspondingly lesser and greater towards the small and large ends of the conical surface. The strip has a base coating of wax, and a thermoplastic ink is used having a higher melting point than the wax. During the hot pressing, the ink is not melted but merely made tacky so that it adheres to the article, and the base coating is heated to the point where slippage due to the difference in speed between the article surface and the strips at positions other than the medial line occurs in the coating. This causes the transferred indicia to be contracted and expanded above and below the medial line (Fig. 4, not shown). The machine employed is generally similar to those described in Specifications 937,071 and 954,054 and comprises a table 41, Fig. 6 (not shown), to which the articles are fed one by one from a supply shoot 13 by an intermittently rotating turret 16 and from which they are passed to a delivery shoot 14 by the turret. The table 41 has an opening 43 at the marking station into which the articles are successively moved to seat on a rotor 44 which rotates the article B about its axis during marking. The article is pressed against the rotor 44 by a nozzle 62 which may serve to inflate it during marking. The indicia-carrying strip S is fed from a supply roll 2 by a sprocket 12 engaging perforations therein and passes over guide rollers 9 to a wind-up roll 3. The rollers 9 are mounted on a carriage 11 reciprocated so as to cause the portion of the strip adjacent to the marking station to be stationary whilst the turret is rotating, and to be forwarded at the required speed during marking. The table 41 and turret 16, however, are not horizontal as in the prior machines, but are inclined so that the line 9 contact between the article and the strip is vertical.
