1361430 Bisphenols DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 Dec 1971 58051/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] A bisphenol is obtained by the condensation of a phenol which is unsubstitutedin the p-position with a ketone in the presence of, as a catalyst, an acidic cation exchange resin which has been partially neutralized with a thiazolidine of the formula wherein each R is independently H, -CH 3 or -C 2 H 5 , R<SP>1</SP> is H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cyanoalkyl, aminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, phenylalkyl, phenyl or alkylphenyl of 1-10 carbon atoms, and each R<SP>11</SP> is independently H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenylalkyl, phenyl or alkylphenyl of 1-10 carbon atoms or together form a C 4-6 alkylene group. In the Example (2), phenoland acetone are condensed to produce bisphenol A in the presence of a catalyst which is a sulphonic acid derivative of a styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, partially neutralized with 2,2-dimethylthiazolidine. |
