PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking device of a rope for an elevator attaining enhancement of safety by making it as a device with strong braking force and less sliding. SOLUTION: The braking device of the rope for the elevator is constituted by a brake body 6 installed so as to surround the rope 2 for hanging a car 1 of the elevator; a retaining plate 9 mounted to the brake body 6 and opposed to one surface of the rope 2; a braking material 7 opposed to the other surface of the rope 2, being in the upward state and in the non-contact state with the rope 2 at a usual time, becoming in the contact state with the rope 2 rotated if necessary, and retaining/braking the rope by the retaining plate 9; and an elastic body 11 for applying braking force to the braking material 7.
