1281577 Polyamide-modified aminoplasts; compositions CIBA-GEIGY AG 31 Oct 1969 [8 Nov 1968] 53598/69 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] Modified aminoplast precondensates stable in aqueous solution are obtained by reaction of an etherified aminoplast precondensate with a basic polyamide derived from a poylmerized fatty acid and a polyalkylene polyamine, in the presence of an organic solvent, sufficient acid being added not later than at the end of the reaction to give a product having a pH of 2-8 after addition of water to a solids content of 10-50%. Suitable precondensates include those derived from urea, ethyleneurea, propyleneurea and dihydroxy ethyleneurea, and particularly aminotriazines. Preferred polyamides are derived from dirnerized or trimerized linoleic or linolenic acids and polyethylene polyamines having 2-4 ethylene amine units. Suitable solvents include dioxan, methanol; ethanol, isopropanol, and ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol butyl ethers. Suitable acids are formic and acetic acids. The reaction is conducted at pH 5-6 and 20- 100‹ C., there usually being 0À11-1À45 amine groups in the polyamide per methylol group in the precondensate. In the examples polyamides from polymerized linoleic acid and excess of diethylene triamine, dissolved in methanol, ethanol, isopropanol or butoxyethanol are heated with a dito tri-butyl hexamethylolmelamine, hexakis methoxymethylmelamine, a polyethylene glycol- and butylether of hexamethylolmelamine, dimethyl trimethylolmelamine, or the bis methoxylmethyl derivatives of ethyleneurea, propyleneurea, dihydroxypropyleneurea, acetylenediurea or ethyl carbamate in similar solvents, acidification being with acetic acid. The products are used to coat glass, and to treat dyed wool in baths also containing sodium phosphate and polyoxyethylenated octadecanol. |
