1282519 Impact absorbing steering wheels VOLKSWAGENWERK AG 19 Jan 1970 [12 March 1969] 2486/70 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A steering wheel assembly is characterized by an impact absorbing member comprising a tubular deformation member 5 connected at one end to a boss 1 and constructed from a substantially rectangular sheet 6 having rhomboidal cut-outs 11 therein, the sheet being bent into cylindrical form and its ends or edges 16, 17 welded together resulting in the member 5 having a structure resembling the lattice formed by a plurality of pairs of strips 13, 14, each pair emanating from a common point 12 and coiled in helical windings of identical pitch and opposite hand, the intersections 15 of the pairs of strips being uniformly spaced over the cylindrical surface. In the embodiment shown the end of member 5 remote from the boss 1 fits within the head 8 of, but does not touch, a padded impact member 7. In the event of impact this member 7 is forced on to the deformation member 5 which collapses. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the member 5 is positioned between, and is welded to, the spokes and boss of the assembly. |
