<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately display a display image while reducing power consumption of a backlight of a liquid crystal display element. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A PWMGAIN calculation circuit 107 calculates an adjustment value for adjusting the luminance of a backlight means based on an average luminance of an image of each screen and a predetermined luminance adjustment straight line. According to the adjustment value, a PWM generation circuit 108 generates a PWM signal for driving a backlight to control the luminance of the backlight. Further, amplification control of an image signal of a display object is performed based on the average luminance of the image for each screen, the adjustment value from the PWMGAIN calculation circuit 107 and an image luminance correction straight line specified by one or both of minimum luminance and maximum luminance of the image of each screen.
