IMPACT-ABSORBING STEERING DEVICE

In an impact-absorbing steering device, an upper bracket (4) for mounting a column (2) to a vehicle body (6) has a column support section (4a) axially fitted, with a predetermined interference, to the outer periphery of the column (2).  The column (2) is press-fitted in the bracket (4) and is constantly in pressure contact with the column support section (4a).  Accordingly, when an impact force axially pushing the column (2) is applied to the column by a secondary collision, the column (2) moves producing large friction between the column (2) and the column support section (4a).  The friction reduces the energy of the secondary collision.  Thus, the impact-absorbing steering device is constructed simply and operates stably.
