A suture tensioning mechanism independently retains two separate lengths of suture and has an engagement member that controls its operation. Preferably, the suture is retained on spools 52a, 52b which are coupled to ratchet wheels 50a, 50b which are in turn coupled to knobs 42a, 42b which can be turned by hand. An engagement member 48 is an axle through the spools, wheels and knobs and can be moved laterally to selectively engage either one or both wheels so that the sutures can be tightened independently or simultaneously. The mechanism may form part of a bone anchor insertion device (figure 1) having a handle and a projecting tube member in which the bone anchor is mounted. The tensioning mechanism is mounted in the handle of the device. |
