The transmitter (1) has a laser diode (2) for producing a light beam (7). A light guiding element (3) i.e. glass fiber, and a light beam shaping unit e.g. diffractive optical element (6), are integrated with each other. The guiding element and the laser diode record information in the light beam. The guiding element has an end (3a) facing the laser diode, and another end (3b) facing the shaping unit. The shaping unit expands and/or collimates the light beam. A gradient index element is associated with another diffractive optical element.
