1449054 Olefin polymerization catalyst dispersion IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 March 1974 [29 March 1973] 15157/73 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized using a dispersion of a transistion metal olefin polymerization catalyst or catalyst component, optionally supported on a support such as an oxide, in an inert diluent, the dispersion being stabilized by a graft or block hydrocarbon copolymer containing at least one segment which is adsorbed on the catalyst, catalyst component or support and at least one segment which is soluble in, or solvatable by, the diluent. Suitable diluents are hydrocarbons while suitable segments for adsorption are of polystyrene and solvatable or soluble segments are suitably polymers of conjugated dienes. The dispersions may be obtained by simple mixing or preferably by subjecting the mixture to shearing action. Examples refer to the polymerization of ethylene, ethylene - propylene, ethylene - hexene - 1 and ethylene - butene - 1, under pressure or in a solvent at low pressures, in some cases in the presence of hydrogen and/or additional AlEt 3 , and using dispersions in heptane or a hydrocarbon fraction of tetrakis (trimethyl silylmethyl) zirconium, zirconium or titanium tetrabenzyl (supported on alumina), TiCl 3 , MgSO 4 +TiCl 4 + VOCl 3 + Et 2 AlCl, or MgO + AlEt 3 + VCl 4 , together with a styrene-isoprene block copolymer. |
