<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for desulfurizing molten metal by which the coagulation of a desulfurizing agent can be prevented by suppressing the drop of the temperature of the hot metal accompanying the addition of the desulfurizing agent when desulfurizing the hot metal by using a mechanically stirring desulfurizing apparatus, and a desulfurization treatment can be performed in a short period of time by promoting the diffusion of the desulfurizing agent in the hot metal. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the desulfurizing method of a hot metal 3 using a mechanically stirring desulfurizing apparatus, a desulfurizing agent 12 heated by the flame of a burner is subjected to the top-blown addition from a top-blowing lance 5 onto the hot metal bath surface stirred by stirring blades 4. The desulfurizing agent is subjected to the top-blown addition together with the carrier gas from a center hole formed in a center part of a fore-end of the top-blowing lance. The flame is formed at the fore-end of the top-blowing lance by feeding any one of oxygen-containing gas, hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuel of, hydrocarbon-based liquid fuel and carbon-based solid fuel from circumferential holes formed in the circumference of the center hole, and the desulfurizing agent is preferably heated by the flame.
