An item-conveying device (20) includes a plate assembly (30) having an arm portion (31) and a spatula portion (32) cantilevered therefrom. The spatula portion (32) has at least one gripping opening (36) and a fluid channel (37) extends from the arm portion (31) to the gripping opening(s) (36). Upon connection of the fluid channel (37) to a vacuum source, a suction will be produced at the gripping opening(s) (36) to hold an item against the spatula portion (32).
