PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly improve swelling of an electrochemical capacitor with time by controlling solvent decomposition reaction originating from moisture in an electrolyte. SOLUTION: An electrolyte for the electrochemical capacitor contains an electrolyte (A) consisting of spiro type quaternary ammonium cation and anion, carboxylic acid methyl ester (B) expressed by general formula (2) [where R1is a 1-4C monovalent hydrocarbon radical], and a nonaqueous solvent (C) other than the carboxylic acid methyl ester (B), and 1 to 11% by weight of (B) is contained to the total weight of (A), (B) and (C).
