<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display of IPS mode having excellent display quality for observing both displays of landscape and portrait, a polarized sunglass being mounted thereon as it is, without any additional member. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes: a gate line 43 formed on an array substrate; a comb-shaped pixel electrode 7; a comb-shaped common electrode 3 which generates a transverse electric field between the comb-shaped pixel electrode 7 and the common electrode; an alignment film having an alignment direction inclined at a prescribed rubbing angle β with respect to the vertical direction vertical to the gate line 43; and two areas having different response directions of liquid crystal (upper pixel 47a, lower pixel 47b), wherein combs of the pixel electrode 7 and the common electrode 3 are inclined at a prescribed electrode angle α with respect to the vertical direction in each of two areas, and the electrode angle α and the rubbing angle β, in each of the two areas, satisfy the conditions: ¾α¾>¾β¾ and 90°-¾α-β¾≥45°.
