PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device that has a configuration capable of switching a gap between a recording head and a material to be recorded, and that is able to record a high quality image at a low cost. SOLUTION: The recording device includes: a carriage 50 that moves in a main scanning direction with the recording head mounted thereon; and a guide plate metal rail 52 for guiding the movement of the carriage 50. The carriage 50 is provided with a sliding member 58 movable in the direction of the height of the carriage 50 relative to this carriage 50. Between the carriage 50 and the sliding member 58, a switching member 583 is disposed for moving in the main scanning direction relative to them, thereby relatively displacing the carriage 50 and sliding member 58 in the direction of the height of the carriage 50.
