PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid residual amount detecting method capable of detecting such a malfunction of a detecting means as to transmit a signal that "there is liquid" even when the liquid is thoroughly consumed, to provide a failure detecting device, a liquid consuming device, and a liquid housing container. SOLUTION: The liquid housing container 1 is provided with an ink pack 7, a sensor chamber 21 connected to the ink pack 7 and whose volume is shrinkable, an ink detecting part 11 capable of detecting a volume change of the sensor chamber 21, and an opening and closing valve mechanism 12 disposed between the ink pack 7 and the sensor chamber 21 and capable of shutting the flow of the ink from the ink pack 7 into the sensor chamber 21. The ink detecting part 11 performs detecting operations to the liquid housing container 1 for both states when a volume of the sensor chamber 21 shrinks by sucking ink in the sensor chamber 21 from an ink supplying opening 9 under a condition that the opening and closing valve mechanism 12 is closed, and when the opening and closing valve mechanism 12 is open.
