PURPOSE: To effectively utilize the backup storing means of a computer. CONSTITUTION: A file (or disk sector) is divided into blocks and an identification signal which indicates the value forming the content of a related block is generated to each block. Then only blocks having identification signals which are different from those generated to each corresponding block of the blocks constituting the future version of the file are stored in backup memories 30-1 to 30-P. When the future version of the file does not exist, all blocks constituting the present file are stored in the memories 30-1 to 30-P.
