A method of controlling interference of data transmissions over frequency channels allocated to user equipment by a base station, a base station, a communications system and a computer program product are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (i) monitoring at said base station current data transmission interference; (ii) determining at said base station an interference cancellation efficiency achievable for data transmissions over frequency channels allocatable to said user equipment by said base station; and (iii) for data transmissions over each frequency channel currently allocated which fail to achieve a predetermined interference cancellation efficiency, reallocating that data transmission to another frequency channel, said another frequency channel being determined by said base station to have an improved interference cancellation efficiency. By selecting a frequency channel based on interference cancellation factors, co-linearity between data transmissions on the selected frequency channels and data transmission on interfering frequency channels can be avoided. This approach helps to ensure that interfering signals from other subsystems do not propagate through the channels highly correlated with the frequency channel selected for the data transmissions which helps to improve overall quality of service levels.
