A picture selecting system is provided with a picture output device and a portable terminal supplying a picture file showing a picture outputted by the picture output device. The portable terminal has at least a display part or a decoder decoding the picture file. The picture output device has a plurality of decoders decoding various types of picture files. The portable terminal transmits information showing a picture file form which it itself can decode to the picture output device. When the picture output device receives information showing the picture file form transmitted from the portable terminal, it generates a converted picture file obtained by converting the picture which the picture output device holds into a picture file form which received information shows and transmits it to the portable terminal. The portable terminal receives the picture file transmitted from the picture output device, decodes it and displays it by a display part.
