In response to a connection being made between a user 102 of a user terminal 104 (eg a Personal Computer) executing a communication client 110 (eg a VoIP application) and a further user 114 over a communication network 106 (eg the Internet), the communication client determines the status of an audio output device (eg the speaker of a telephone handset 112) used for voice or video communications and in response to determining that the audio output device is in a muted state, the communication client controls the audio output device to deactivate the muted state such that audio information transmitted from the further user via the connection can be heard by the user of the user terminal. |
