<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road marking recognition device for learning road markings in each area. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A similarity degree between an image of the front of a vehicle imaged by an imaging unit for imaging surroundings of the vehicle and a road marking pattern "STOP" is calculated. When the maximum value of the calculation result of the similarity degree is x<SB>1</SB>, the image of a display unit is switched to an image of the vehicle surroundings since the similarity degree x<SB>1</SB>is within a similar allowable range [A<SB>0</SB>, B<SB>0</SB>] of the similarity degree. When the maximum value of the calculation result of the similarity degree is x<SB>2</SB>, and a brake is on and the vehicle speed is not higher than a predetermined speed, the image on the display unit is switched to the image of the vehicle surroundings by changing the similarity allowable range [A<SB>0</SB>, B<SB>0</SB>] to [A<SB>1</SB>, B<SB>1</SB>] since the similarity degree x<SB>2</SB>is out of the similarity allowable range but within the maximum allowable range [α, β]. Here, B<SB>1</SB>is equal to x<SB>2</SB>, and B<SB>0</SB>-A<SB>0</SB>is equal to B<SB>1</SB>-A<SB>1</SB>. The similarity allowable range [A<SB>1</SB>, B<SB>1</SB>] after the change is within the similarity allowable range corresponding to the road marking "STOP" in a district where the vehicle is located.
