The method involves selecting operating modes during travel of a cross-wound bobbin (11), where the modes are adjustable and differ by quality of thread monitoring and/or error cleaning in a region of start length for working of a yarn clearer after discharging the start length in standard attitude. The regular standard quality monitoring of a running thread is provided in the region of the starting length, and during travel of the remaining bobbin in the operating modes of the yarn clearer. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a workstation of a cross-wound bobbin to produce a textile machine after changing a cross-wound bobbin/empty case.
