<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device capable of reducing power consumption with a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 1 includes a light emitting region where a plurality of LEDs 11a to 11d are disposed, LED driving units 20a to 20d driving the LEDs 11a to 11d, an LED control unit 21 controlling driving of the LEDs 11a to 11d by the LED driving unit 20a to 20d, a video size determining unit 22 determining which one in sizes of a plurality of predetermined types matches the size of an effective video region of a video signal VS. The light emitting region is divided into four light-emitting division regions 14a to 14d.
