<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight for individually controlling luminance of backlight units. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight is constituted of a plurality of backlight units which are cascade-connected with one another. Each backlight unit includes a light emitting source and a unit control circuit. The unit control circuit receives a control frame 200-1 including luminance information of each backlight unit generated by a backlight control circuit, reads luminance information to its own light emitting source from a data field DF1 and controls luminance of its light emitting source on the basis of the received luminance information. The unit control circuit generates a new control frame 200-2 from which the data field DF1 including the read luminance information is deleted and transmits the new control frame to the consecutive backlight unit.
