In devices for freezing pourable and flowing materials by direct contact with a low-boiling liquefied gas, the materials are moved on a conveyor belt many times through a bath consisting of the liquefied gas. These devices are well-suited for continuous production on an industrial scale, but have a high space requirement. For scientific use, for example, small easily sterilisable devices are preferred. Such a device consists of an insulated housing (1), in which a rotatable hollow cylinder (2) is arranged, the axis of rotation (3) of which is inclined at an angle to the horizontal and on the inner wall of which a band worm (5) is arranged. In the hollow cylinder, the bath (7) consisting of a low-boiling liquefied gas, for example nitrogen, is situated.
