The method involves transporting a pipe element close to a trench and to a female end of a pipe section. The element is seized using a manipulating device (1) at an end of an articulated arm (2) of a motorized hoisting engine (3) by a joint (4) and an orientation ring (4'). The element is located in an outlet trench. Fixed and movable vacuum lifting and handling beams (7, 8) are maintained against an external wall of the section and a pipe close to the female end and a male end of the element. An assembly formed by the beam (8) and the element is moved to encase the male end with female end. An independent claim is also included for a manipulating device for implementing a method for descending and positioning a pipe element.
