<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the apparatus and the method for error diffusion processing for performing high speed error diffusion operation process, while maintaining proper tone characteristics of an image, by preparing a rounding off circuit and a half-adjust circuit in parallel in order to calculate an operation value by error diffusion operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In parallel to the rounding off operation by a rounding off circuit 161, the half-adjust operation is executed by a half-adjust circuit 162. At that time, a summed result at a summer 901A is once latched with a flip-flop 163, in order to cut off the half-adjust operation from a critical path. The result of the rounding off operation is subtracted from the result of the half-adjust operation at a subtractor 165. The subtraction result is added to richness values IDIN1 and IDIN2 of an input image element of an original image at a summer 166.
