PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation system capable of readily finding specific types of character strings such as the names of cities, towns, villages, and locations, while scrolling a map screen. SOLUTION: A control circuit 11 displays a road map including character strings indicating the names of cities, towns, villages, facilities, etc. on a display monitor 16. When the map is started to scroll, character strings belonging to prescribed categories are highlighted on the basis of a display control table and a highlight table. Character strings to be displayed and the presence or absence of highlighted display are changed, according to the change in the scale.
