<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a target detection system for reducing the processing load for target search by properly setting a search range. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Each pixel on a search target image is set in advance to either a search target area where a target is highly likely to be found and a search non-target area where the target is less likely to be found. Eight patterns different in angle are prepared with respect to the same template image, and pattern matching independent from angle is performed to the search target area on the search target image by use of one of the template images. When matching is determined by the angle-independent pattern matching, angle-dependent pattern matching is further performed to the search target area on the search target image by use of each of the eight patterns different in angle.
