<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device suitable for the TBA mode or the like, which efficiently suppresses the occurrence of display defects such as display unevenness and image persistence due to the reduction in a voltage holding ratio caused by impurity ions. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate disposed to face each other and a liquid crystal layer held between both of the substrates. A first electrode and a second electrode facing the first electrode in parallel with the first electrode within a pixel are disposed on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate, and an alignment film, an adsorption/barrier layer, and a filter layer are laminated on a display region on the liquid crystal layer side of the second substrate in this order from the liquid crystal layer side, and the liquid crystal layer includes p-type nematic liquid crystal and is driven by an electric field generated between the first electrode and the second electrode, and molecules of the p-type nematic liquid crystal are aligned perpendicularly to surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate, and the adsorption/barrier layer has the adsorbing capability to adsorb impurity ions included in the liquid crystal layer and has the gas barrier capability to prevent a gas component generated from the filter layer from entering the liquid crystal layer.
