The mandrel unit comprises a frame (40) carrying a rotor (47) with mandrels (96) extending radially from it, drives (84) and angular position controls (90-108) for the rotor. The drives consist of a motor and a pulse generator which responds to the shaft movement and transmits the pulses to a control unit. A reduction gear train (86) is situated between the rotor and the drive motor. The rotor is mounted on a sleeve (48) fixed to the frame and has an annular distribution groove (68) for each mandrel in its outer surface. Each distribution groove is connected to a pressure fluid source through a control valve and a first duct (69) which passes through the sleeve parallel to its axis, and to a recess (59) containing a control piston (61) for the mandrels.
