PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display substrate, and a display panel having the display substrate. SOLUTION: In the display substrate and a display panel of a vertical alignment mode including the display substrate, a first slit pattern is formed in a common electrode of the display substrate. The first slit pattern includes a pair of positive inscription notches and negative inscription notches alternately formed in the slits. The branch points where the slits meet each other and the ends of the slits have a function similar to that of a pair of the positive inscription notches in generation of singular point in liquid crystal. Contact holes to expose portions of output electrodes of switching elements are formed in the protective film of the array substrate, and the contact holes correspond to a pair of the positive inscription notches. Level difference grooves are formed in the protective films corresponding to sustain electrodes. The branch points of the slits can be so disposed as to correspond to the sustain electrodes.
