Provided are an input unit and a control method thereof. In an embodiment of the method, a portion of an input member such as a finger, and a portion of a shadow of the input member generated by a light source are perceived through image processing. Relationship information between the image and shadow of the input member are used, so as to determine if an input is made. Also, the input pattern can be provided to a user using an imaging light, whereas the images can be detected using a detection light.
