<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling device for smoothly improving air cooling efficiency by a simple configuration, and to provide a projection type image display apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The cooling device 40 includes: a cooling duct 41 through which air passes; and a Peltier cooling unit 45 for cooling the cooling duct. A continuous or discontinuous spiral projection is formed on the internal face of the cooling duct 41. The Peltier cooling unit 45 includes a Peltier element 451, which is attached to the external surface of the cooling duct 41. Air advances in the cooling duct 41 while spirally rotating along grooves 412, thereby increasing a contact area between the internal face of the duct and air, compared to a case where air advances straight in the cooling duct 41.
