The device has a chamber comprising a universal sample table (6) for fixing a coated substrate on a sample changer (4). A vacuum UV light source or a UV clarifier excimer light source (9) is cooled with the inert gas. A gas sensor (16) samples the inert gas to measure oxygen content in the inert gas. Brackets (13, 14) are provided at walls (1) and at a chamber base (3) for coupling a camera (12) e.g. high speed video camera and charge-coupled device camcorder, to the device. The sample changer comprises a recess for retaining a radiometric sensor (5) with a gallium phosphide photodiode.
