<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having small thickness fluctuation Δd<SB>ave</SB>of a magnetic layer, a satisfactory C/N ratio of playback output and excellent durability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes a back coat layer on a principal surface of a non-magnetic support and includes on the other principal surface, an undercoat layer including non-magnetic powder, a magnetic layer including magnetic powder and an intermediate layer including a lubricant disposed between the undercoat layer and the magnetic layer. In the magnetic recording medium, a solvent having a solubility parameter value (SP value) of 11 or more or 8 or less is used as an intermediate layer forming paint and each layer of the undercoat layer, the intermediate layer and the magnetic layer is coated and dried to be sequentially formed.
