<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy by enhancing power transmitting efficiency in a multistage shift planetary gear train with forward eight stages. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The multistage shift planetary gear train includes an input shaft 10, an output shaft 12, and four single pinion type planetary gear sets 14, 16, 18, 19 (reduction gear). The input shaft 10 is connected to a second carrier 38 and is connectable to a third ring gear 42 and a fourth sun gear 50 interconnected integrally. The output shaft 12 is connected to a fourth ring gear 52, is integrally connected to a first sun gear 20 and a second sun gear 30, and can be fixed to a stationary part 64. A first ring gear 22 can be fixed to the stationary part 64. A first carrier 28 is connected to a third carrier 48 and a fourth carrier 58. A second ring gear 32 is connectable to a third sun gear 40, and the first carrier 28, the third carrier 48 and the fourth carrier 58 which are interconnected integrally, respectively.
