PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous near-infrared fluorescent material with high quantum yield which emits near-infrared light and is used in an in vivo imaging technique, and to provide a multimodal aqueous near-infrared fluorescent material with high quantum yield which is used in a multimodal in vivo imaging technique using an optical (fluorescence) imaging, MRI, SPECT, etc. SOLUTION: The aqueous near-infrared fluorescent material has a semiconductor quantum dot having an emission band in the near-infrared region and a coating layer coating the surface of the semiconductor quantum dot, wherein the coating layer is a layer composed of coated peptides selected from the group consisting of cysteine and consisting of peptides which are composed of 2-8 amino acid residues and contain one or more cysteine residues in amino acid residues.
