The filter unit (1), for a biological fluid and especially blood or blood components, has an outer envelope (2) with an least one inlet opening (3) and at least two outlet openings (4,5) to collect the filtrate. The filter contains at least two separate and distinctive filters (6,7) within the envelope, to form an inflow chamber (8) between them linked to the inlet. Each filter has an outflow chamber (9,10) linked to the outlets. The blood filter unit has two filters, composed of one or more layers of a porous nonwoven and/or membrane material e.g. a hydrophilic material like cellulose and its derivatives such as cellulose acetate, or a treated hydrophilic polymer or copolymer. The different layers within each separate filter have a different porosity and/or composition. The two filters are held within the shrouding envelope by supple seals, which can distort. The outer envelope skin is formed by two sheets (11,12) of supple plastics, bonded together at their edges. The filter unit has a pliable frame (13a,13b) to hold the filters, using two flexible and perforated sheets, with the filters between them. The sheets are secured at the periphery of the filters by a welded cord (15) across the filters and welding at the periphery of the shrouding envelope at their sheets. An Independent claim is also included for a sterile blood filter system, with pockets in a closed circuit, which has a primary pocket linked by a tube to the filter unit and a secondary pocket to take the filtrate by a tube from the filter outlet. |
