868,721. Drilling long holes. LEBLOND MACHINE TOOL CO., R. K. Nov. 11, 1957 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 35016/57. Class 83 (3). In drilling long holes in rotating work 18, cooling fluid, e.g. cutting oil, is supplied, along the outside of the drill 28, to the hole 48 being drilled and arranged to impinge tangentially, Fig. 3, on the drill so as to reduce the risk of drill vibration. The machine described is the same as that in Specification 871,475, except for the drill-guiding work-clamp 20, which has a guide 42 for the drill and a tangential opening 36, 38 for the coolant. The latter directs the coolant along a rotary path, in the same direction of rotation as the work and thus of the work-engaging assembly 54. In a modification, Fig. 4, the opening 361, 38<SP>1</SP> is also directed axially, towards the work, and the coolant impinges on a sleeve surrounding the drill. |
