摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head positioning method for a magnetic recording apparatus which solves a problem that an error occurs in the calculation of a position of a magnetic head due to variations in the width and sensitivity of the magnetic head. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A head positioning control unit of a magnetic recording apparatus includes a burst read unit which reads a value of a servo burst contained in a servo signal read from the magnetic head, a sine value/cosine value calculating unit which calculates a sine value and a cosine value from the servo burst value, a tangent value calculating unit which calculates a tangent value from the sine value and the cosine value, a phase value calculating unit which calculates a phase value from the tangent value using an inverse tangent function, a basic head position calculating unit which calculates a basic position of the magnetic head from the phase value, a correction value calculating unit which calculates a correction value for correcting an error between the basic position and the actual position of the magnetic head, and a head position calculating unit which calculates a true position of the magnetic head by adding the correction value to the basic position of the magnetic head.
