PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problems that, in order to respond to requirements of higher image quality in an image forming apparatus by an electrophotographic process, toner is prepared to have a smaller average particle size and shaped into a more round form, however, because of the toner, a higher pressure is necessary to a blade for a cleaning process on a residual toner, which gives adverse influences on durability of the surface of an image carrier, and that a solid lubricant is scraped by a supply member such as a brush to be supplied to the image carrier surface and applied to form a uniform lubricating layer, however, because the lubricant particles supplied are not uniform in size, it is difficult to form a uniform layer even when a leveling blade is used, which induces troubles such as flaws on the image carrier or wear of the leveling blade. SOLUTION: A powder compact prepared by press-forming a powdery protecting agent raw material is used as a protecting agent, the compact formed into a porous material having an open cell rate of 3 to 15 vol.% and a closed cell rate of 0 to 1 vol.%.
