PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently separating a metal salt which is a polymerization catalyst, from a polyphenylene ether. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyphenylene ether comprises preparing a polymerization solution constituted by the total of 100 pts.mass of (M) a 10 to 25 pts.mass phenolic compound and (A) a 75 to 90 pts.mass aromatic solvent and (C) a 0.1 pt.mass to 10 pts.mass catalyst containing the metal salt as its component, performing the oxidative polymerization of the phenolic compound (M) by passing an oxygen-containing gas through the polymerization solution, stopping the polymerization by mixing an aqueous chelating agent solution, removing a diphenoquinone compound produced as a byproduct by quinone-binding treatment or reduction, and separating an aqueous phase by liquid-liquid separation to obtain the polyphenylene ether, wherein (D) 0.001 to 0.004 pt.wt. ionic catalyst is added to the polymerization solution during a time point of from preparing the polymerization solution to stopping the polymerization.
