PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for charging a battery are provided to shorten a battery charge time by supplying a power to a plurality of small capacity battery packs at the same time. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of charge circuits(200~20N) supplies a power to a plurality of battery packs(400~40N). A control signal generating part outputs a first control signal and a second control signal. A plurality of first switching parts(300~30N) is arranged in the battery packs. The first switching part includes a discharge switching part and a charge switching part. The discharge switching part connects the battery pack to a power supply terminal according to the first control signal. The charge switching part connects the charge circuit to the battery pack according to the second control signal, is arranged between an external power and a system power supply terminal, and connects the external power to the system power supply terminal according to the second control signal.
