PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas decomposing element which is capable of decomposing many types of malodorous gases with good energy efficiency, and to provide a gas decomposing method. SOLUTION: The gas decomposing element includes a decomposition side electrode 6 that is a porous electrode to which the gas containing a component to be decomposed is introduced, a porous counter electrode 7 that constitutes a pair with the decomposition side electrode and an electrolyte 15 sandwiched between the decomposition side electrode and the counter electrode. The electrode is further characterized by forming a portion to be in contact with the electrolyte of the decomposition side electrode from a material 30 or 33 that is inert to water.
