Provided is a stretched optical film obtained by stretching a resin having a negative intrinsic birefringence which has various excellent characteristics such as being capable of achieving a large negative phase difference in the thickness direction, having a high heat resistance and a high flexibility, being highly resistant against thermal decomposition and suffering from little optical defects such as gelation.  A stretched optical film obtained by stretching a resin having a negative intrinsic birefringence, which contains a polymer comprising, as the constituting unit thereof, e.g., itaconimide or an itaconimide derivative, can achieve a large negative phase difference in the thickness direction and has a high heat resistance.
