A retractable safety device 11, for restricting access to a hazard area (25, Fig 2), comprising parallel array 12 of members 13, 14, 15 with first ends 13A, 14A, 15A pivotally attached to first rail 16, and second ends 13Z, 14Z, 15Z pivotally attached to second rail 17. Array 12 and rails 16, 17 are displaceable in a plane A between a first working configuration and a second storage configuration, in which distance W2 between rails 16, 17 is smaller than the distance (W1, Fig 1A) in the first configuration. Device 11 further comprises slide arms 18, 19 pivotally mounted to second rail 17, and sliders 22, 23, for mounting device 11, which slideably receive slide arms 18, 19, which include stop means 24, 25 for limiting the movement of slide arms 18, 19 relative to sliders 22, 23. The hazard area (25) lies below the access area, and device 11 is horizontal when in a working configuration, and vertical when in a storage configuration. Device 11 may be used in a garage or workshop to cover a pit that is used for servicing vehicles, or it may be used to cover a ditch, duct or conveyor belt where it is necessary to view the site. More than one device 11 may be used to cover an area. |
