PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber having improved responsiveness to reverse turn from a full expansion end to a compression stroke. SOLUTION: A front fork 10 has a pressure spring 66 for energizing a free piston 61 toward the side of a sub piston 52. Herein, an opposite pressure spring 70 is provided for energizing the free piston 61 toward the opposite side to the sub piston 52 only in the initial stage of the compression stroke where a piston rod 20 enters into a cylinder tube 16.
